Grandmotherhood: The Ultimate Adventure in Lullabies, Love and Laughter!
My first-born granddaughter Mya and I. She is now 10.
Welcome, fellow Goddesses, to the wild and wonderful world of grandmotherhood! Today, we're diving headfirst into the joys, challenges, and downright hilarious moments that come with being a Gramma (or a Grandma, Oma, Mimi, Grammy, Nana, Nona, Gran, GiGi) or whatever endearing name your little beings (aka grandkids) call you.
First things first, and no, it's not all about me, but I am called Gramma, so that is what I will use in this blog. You can substitute your special name your little beings call you as we talk about the perks of being a Gramma. Spoiler alert: there are many! From getting to spoil your grandkids with treats, toys, and clothing (and then sending them back to their parents!) to reliving your own childhood through their eyes, being a grandma is like hitting the jackpot of fun and joy.
And then there's the unconditional love from these little beings; their hugs, smiles, and laughter can brighten even the gloomiest days.
With age comes wisdom, and we Grammas have plenty to share. Whether it's passing down family traditions and values, offering advice that could be much different than what we may have used with our own children, or sharing life lessons learned the hard way, being a Gramma means being a trusted source of guidance, encouragement, and support for the next generation and instilling a sense of confidence and constant praise in their growing minds. You have the chance to create a lasting legacy of love and connection that will live on long after you're gone.
Being a Grandma offers a sense of purpose and fulfillment unlike anything else. You have the opportunity to make a profound impact on your grandchildren's lives, helping to shape them into the kind, compassionate, and resilient individuals they are meant to be.
But perhaps the best part of being a Gramma is getting to be a kid again. Whether it's building forts out of blankets, card houses out of playing cards, building a Duplo, Lego, or Playmobile masterpiece, finger painting Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol characters, or having impromptu dance and gymnastics parties in your living room or front yard. Being a Gramma gives you permission to let loose and embrace your inner child as you create unforgettable memories with your grandkids. After all, who says growing up has to be boring?
Plus, as a final bonus, who needs a gym membership when you have little beings to push around the block in their strollers or chase after them when they learn how to ride a bike or, heaven forbid, a motorized car – yes, I'm guilty. Gramma bought both to have at her house. Speaking of chasing, I remember my Grandmother chasing me through her house with a yardstick; thankfully, I was faster than her – Grandmother chasing me through her house with a yardstick; thankfully, I was faster than her – how things have changed!
Let's not fully sugarcoat things – being a grandma isn't always sunshine and rainbows. I am sure I must have done something seriously wrong to have been chased through the house with a yardstick – this could not have been a stolen cookie infraction! There are challenging moments, too, little meltdowns when the little beings do not get their own way, or episodes of chaos when they decide to turn your living room into a makeshift obstacle course, or when they ask you questions that leave you speechless or scratching your Goddess head in ignorance of how to respond (thank goodness for Google and Alexa!). And let's not forget about the sleepless nights spent soothing crying babies or the endless "Baby Shark" rounds on repeat in your head. But who needs sleep anyway when you've got the love of those precious little beings to keep you awake?
Speaking of love, being a gramma is like having your heart walk around outside your body. There's nothing quite like the feeling of seeing your grandchildren light up with excitement when they see you or hearing their infectious laughter fill the room. Or when they say, I love you, Gramma! and your heart simply melts with love. Don't even get me started on the snuggles, cuddles, and hugs – they're like little drops of heaven here on Earth!
So, to all my fellow Goddess Grammas out there, I salute you! You're the real MVPs, the unsung heroes, the queens of cuddles, positive encouragement, and cookies. Here's to the countless memories we make, the laughter we share, and the love that knows no bounds. Grandmotherhood truly is the greatest adventure of all – and I wouldn't trade it for the world!
Until next time, keep spreading love, laughter, and lullabies wherever you go. When it comes to being a Gramma, every moment is a treasure to cherish because those little beings get older, and so do we.
