Transforming Venus: From Menstruation to Menopause
An excerpt from my book: Transforming Venus...
We’ve been through so much on what I like to call our Goddess journey!
In our formidable early teens, we were introduced to menstruation—our monthly companion for the next forty-odd years. Then, in midlife, we arrived at menopause, complete with all the “joys” bundled into that life-altering package. And, of course, there’s the whole “period” (pun absolutely intended) of life that happens in between.
Those middle years—between the two “men” milestones—make up a huge portion of our lives. It’s when a whole lot of life and all its complexities show up, often with perfect comedic timing.
Let’s face it: life is complex, and there are a myriad of things that can shake our confidence and happiness—not to mention the hormonal states that already keep us on our toes.
Every Goddess has her own story, but certain life events are almost universal. For many of us, relationships play a starring role in both our growth and the moments when we feel most stuck.
Relationships
No two women live the exact same Goddess journey. But most of us will recognize some of the significant relationship-related life events that can leave us feeling stuck:
When love no longer feels aligned. You may still care deeply for your partner, but your dreams and goals have taken different paths. And when that partner actively blocks your growth? That’s a whole new challenge.
When you feel you can’t leave (yet). Sometimes the only thing scarier than staying is the idea of leaving—primarily if you depend on your partner financially or emotionally. The unknown can feel overwhelming, even when your heart knows it’s time for change.
When the relationship ends, and you don’t know what’s next. The marriage or partnership is over, but moving forward feels like staring into a fog. Fear of making the wrong move can keep you standing still far longer than you want.
The truth? Many women who fear making the wrong decision end up making no decision at all. That’s how we get stuck—sometimes in a lonely, restless, or “meh” existence that drains our sparkle.
The Work-Life Shift
Some of us had the privilege of staying home with our children—whether for a few months or many years. Returning to work after any break is a challenge, but after a long hiatus, it can feel like the whole world upgraded to a new operating system while we were busy running the home front.
Yes, we picked up incredible skills as CEOs of our households and VPs of child-rearing—crisis management, logistics, negotiation, you name it—but not all of them translate neatly into a job posting. Add in the rapid-fire changes in technology, workplace culture, and “the way things are done,” and it’s easy to feel like you’ve walked into a game where everyone else already knows the rules.
Then there are those of us who’ve been working steadily but have hit a wall. We’ve outgrown our current role, lost the spark, or simply feel like we’re running on autopilot.
When you spend so much of your life at work, it shouldn’t feel like you’re counting the minutes until Friday. Sometimes the whisper for change becomes so loud, you can’t ignore it—but you still might not know where to start or what tools you’ll need to make that leap.
Life Stage Transitions
As we mature, so do our children. When they leave the nest, some of us face the ache of empty-nest syndrome. Others? They pop the champagne, put on their favorite playlist, and dance around the kitchen like nobody’s watching. Either way, it’s a significant shift—a new chapter that comes with its own set of emotions and adjustments.
Many of us also find ourselves in the role of the sandwich generation—caring for aging parents while still supporting our adult children. It’s a balancing act that can stretch your time, finances, and emotions to the limit.
Let’s be honest—if some of the men from Mars had the same nurturing DNA many women do, they’d be just as frazzled trying to keep all these plates spinning. (To be fair, some men are in this same situation—but this book is written for us Goddesses, so they’ll have to find their own survival guide.)
And as if that weren’t enough, life likes to throw in extra curveballs—illness, injury, loss—because apparently we needed bonus rounds in resilience training.
When you add it all up, it’s no wonder Stuck Goddess Syndrome is so common. Honestly, it’s a miracle we’re not all walking around with “Under Construction” signs around our necks.
