Transforming Venus: From Menstruation to Menopause

An excerpt from my Transforming Venus book:

We have been through much on what I like to call 'our Goddess journey'!  In our formidable early teens, we encountered menstruation that would be with most of us for the next forty-odd years of our lives. In midlife, we hit menopause and all of the joys that are bundled into that life-altering package. Then there is that whole “period” (pun intended) of life that happens in between. Those middle years—between the two “men” things that we go through, account for a large portion of our lives when a whole lot of life and its inherent complexities happen!

Let’s face it: Life is complex, and there are a myriad of things that can shake our confidence and happiness, notwithstanding the female hormonal states outlined by the effects of the above.

Every one of us has our own story; no two women have lived the same goddess journey; however, overall, there are a host of life events that may be major contributing factors to goddess stuckness. Some of these may resonate with your own life situation.

Some of us are stuck in relationships that are no longer meeting our needs despite the love we may still feel for our partner. This is a common problem for many mature women, especially if they have new goals and dreams that are a mismatch to those of their significant other. This in itself can be a challenge; even tougher is the situation of that other person thwarting our efforts to achieve those goals and dreams.

Some people are stuck in relationships due to their dependence on their partners. They may not be happy in the relationship, but they feel they have no means, financially or emotionally, to walk away from the situation and into the unknown.

Still, others of us are stuck, not knowing how to move forward from an ended relationship. In this case, the marriage or relationship is over, but we are living in a world of immobility due to our lack of knowledge on how to move forward, or we may simply be afraid to make a wrong step.

Those of us who are afraid of making the wrong decision often make no decision at all. For many of us, this amounts to the dismal, helpless, lonely, and paralyzing status quo. For others, the feelings are not so severe, but we still feel restless and stuck.

Many of us were able to stay at home with our children, some for a short time, others for many years. Returning to work after a short hiatus is challenging enough with children. The bigger challenge is for those who have had the role of CEO of their home and VP of child rearing for an extended period. Finding a new job is intimidating and particularly challenging if we have been working at home raising a family. Yes, we learned and honed many new skills in this challenging role, but they may not all be transferable skills in the business world. Often, after an extended absence from the workforce, many of us feel like the world moved on, from a technological and social standpoint, while we were home raising our families. When the time comes to move on, we don’t feel like we have the confidence, skills, and training to re-enter the business world.

Sometimes we get to a point where we feel we have stagnated at work and need a change in our job. We recognize that we spend many hours each day at our work but feel it no longer satisfies or challenges us. We may be at a point in life where we want to do something that better fulfills our desire to be challenged and satisfied. We are ready to move on to a new phase of our life but don’t know how or where to start, or we need guidance and the tools to support us.

As we have grown into mature goddesses, so have our children aged, and as they move from home, we face empty nest adjustments.

I know this empty nest event does not represent a major life challenge for all; some goddesses celebrate this milestone by doing the happy dance!

Many of us find ourselves taking care of aging parents or other loved ones. Yes, we are part of the sandwich generation, supporting our children and sometimes providing elder care to our parents at the same time!

Some of the men from Mars would be stuck, too, if they were all the nurturing souls we women are and were sandwiched between the emotional and demanding forces of taking care of our children and parents simultaneously.  I recognize that many men are nurturing souls, too, and are stuck in this same conundrum, but they can find their own book--this one is especially for us goddesses!

When we add other contributing aspects of life that may be impacting our lives, such as illness, injury, and death, the complexity and vastness of the stuck goddess syndrome is not so hard to comprehend. Taking the big picture into account, it’s a wonder that every female in the universe is not a stuck goddess!
